Ask a longtime resident what has changed on the peninsula in the last twelve months and the answer usually starts with Nekajui. That is the visible headline. The less obvious story is that every major flag on this 1,400-acre coastline is renovating, reprogramming, or reopening at the same time, and almost none of it is happening outside the current footprint. The peninsula is not getting wider. It is getting denser.
For anyone who already lives here, that distinction matters. It changes where you send visiting family in February, where you can actually get a table on a Saturday, and which venues will be closed for construction when guests fly in. Below is a working map of what has opened, what reopens in November, and what debuts by year end.
Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, did not simply add a hotel to the peninsula. It arrived with a new collection of eight immersive culinary and beverage venues, and the peninsula's own dining count is now sitting at fifteen and climbing. The signature room is Puna, where Chef Diego Muñoz introduces a bold modern Peruvian concept, with dishes like prawn tempura with risoni parihuela, or wagyu sirloin seared over charcoal and served with crispy Pont Neuf potatoes. The wider program is run by Executive Chef Lulu Elízaga, who brings both global experience and deep respect for Guanacaste's culinary heritage.
The practical read for residents: the peninsula's dining depth has roughly doubled in one opening. That reshuffles reservation strategy for the high season, especially on weekends when Nemare closes for its refit and Andaz venues are shifting formats.
The Andaz refresh is not cosmetic. A reimagined Andaz experience debuts this November, where soulful design, playful dining, and mindful wellness come together. The move worth flagging is at Chao Pescao. Already a guest favorite, Chao Pescao is evolving into Papagayo's hottest live music spot, with a new stage at the back of the restaurant hosting Latin and Caribbean bands and the possibility of dancing under the stars. That is a real programming shift for anyone who has treated Chao Pescao as a quiet tapas stop for the last few years.
Rooms are changing too. The resort's 152 rooms and suites are receiving updates, with light-filled terraces opening interiors to the outdoors, and suites now designed with multi-generational families in mind, complete with sofa beds, expanded dining tables, and a warmer, more grounded aesthetic. If you host family who normally book Andaz for winter visits, expect a different room type and a different bar scene on the same reservation.
The other end of the peninsula is on a slower clock. Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo is elevating the guest experience with a comprehensive enhancement project set to debut in late 2026, thoughtfully evolving how guests stay, dine, and gather across the resort.
The specific pieces to know:
Translation for residents: the Four Seasons event calendar will hold through most of 2026, but plan any large private gathering around a late-year handoff between old and new ballroom.
The full roster is easier to hold as a table than as prose. Not every venue is at every resort, and knowing where each sits saves time when a guest asks for "something on the water."
| Venue | Location | Format | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puna | Nekajui | Modern Peruvian | Signature room, Chef Diego Muñoz |
| Manglar | Prieta Beach Club | Farm-to-table Costa Rican | Toes-in-the-sand at Prieta Beach Club |
| Olas | Prieta Beach Club | International with Costa Rican influence | Fresh, seasonal cuisine at Prieta Beach Club |
| Virador Beach Club | Four Seasons side | Mediterranean and Levantine | Culinary vision of Chef Khaled Natour |
| Niri Beach Club | Peninsula | Iberian with Costa Rican soul | Meaning "salt" in Chorotega |
| Chao Pescao | Andaz | Tapas plus live music from November | New back stage for Latin bands |
| Nemare | Four Seasons | Latin American steakhouse | Closed during refit, reopens with outdoor communal seating |
| Pesce | Four Seasons | Italian, ocean view balcony | Classic Italian, extensive wine list |
| Palapita | Tennis Centre | Costa Rican street food | Paired with locally crafted Papagayo Brewery beers |
| Bahia | Four Seasons | All-day Latin American | Wood-fired open kitchen, grilled prawns, café chorreado |
| Ostra | Andaz | Southeast Asian | Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia with local ingredients |
| Gaio | Andaz | Italian trattoria | Shareable dishes, lively vibe |
| Dive Bar | Marina Papagayo | Casual waterfront | Light fare, cocktails, Culebra Bay views |
| Meso | Casa de Playa, Nacascolo | Mediterranean | Seasonal only, see below |
| Patio Social | Papagayo Park | Casual all-day | Playful atmosphere in Papagayo Park |
Meso deserves a footnote because it trips up guests every year. Dinner service is operated seasonally from mid-November until April, and the restaurant sits inside a protected nature preserve at Nacascolo Beach, requiring a complimentary shuttle from the hotel lobby; between 5:00 and 6:00 pm the shuttle rides through mangroves with frequent wildlife sightings, and after 6:00 pm it uses the golf course path. Book the earlier window if the guest wants the mangrove ride.
The peninsula's calendar runs on a few pinned events. If you host, plan around these.
The under-discussed piece of the year is not a restaurant. It is Papagayo Park, which is quietly absorbing the daytime rhythm that used to be split between three separate resort pools. Described as the vibrant new heart of the peninsula, Papagayo Park brings families together through amenities including tennis, pickleball, padel courts, a lap pool, wellness shala, pump track, basketball courts, family play zones, dining venues, and expansive green spaces, with pools and family attractions open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
For property owners with school-age visitors, the park changes the daily plan. A morning at Papagayo Park, lunch at Patio Social, and a shuttle over to Prieta Beach for the afternoon is now a realistic weekday loop without any resort reservation friction. The Clubhouse at Prieta Beach anchors the other end. It features Olas and Manglar alongside a newly renovated two-story fitness center, spa, beach activities, and a beachfront pool with cabanas, plus dedicated concierge, Kids Club, and a dynamic calendar of social, lifestyle, and wellness events.
The through-line in all of this is that the peninsula's operators are not competing on square footage. They are competing on programming inside walls that already exist. Membership at The Club is intentionally limited to 350 memberships, defined not by walls but by nature, adventure and community, and every 2026 project reinforces that scarcity. Nekajui adds culinary depth without adding a new zone. Andaz layers music onto a room residents already know. Four Seasons is redesigning rooms and formats rather than building outward. The peninsula remains a protected 1,400-acre landscape, part of a rare biological corridor connected to the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, and that ceiling is the point.
For owners, the practical takeaway is calendar management. Stack winter visits around Nekajui and Andaz. Save late-2026 trips for the Four Seasons debut. Use the shoulder weeks in October and early November, when Andaz is still finishing, for quieter access to the beach clubs.
