Clear, aquamarine waters meet the black volcanic sand beach, and tree-covered mountains rise around the cove. This small, private beach is a quiet neighbor to Playas del Coco, and it has all the convenience of being 10 minutes away from Coco’s center while being slightly removed from the bustle of its tourism and nightlife.

Sportfishing was the catalyst of Playa Ocotal’s development in the late 20th Century. It grew from a private hacienda into a hidden but beloved vacation spot. Eventually, as the areas around it grew as well, this community became the perfect spot for year-round residents who wanted the peace of a small town while still being close to the luxury and bustle of larger communities.

The slopes leading to the beach are peppered with beautiful ocean-view homes. Nestled among nature and close to a handful of restaurants and shops, these homes are the picture of tranquil living.

Despite its feeling of seclusion, Playa Ocotal residents enjoy the convenience of being just down the coast from the amenities of Playas del Coco.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The two main restaurants in Playa Ocotal are Maracuyá Beach Club & Father Rooster. With a stunning view of the water, Maracuyá Beach Club is helmed by an acclaimed chef and serves up a luxurious tropical experience. The dishes are colorful and fresh, and because it’s located in the Bahia Pez Vela Beach Resort, it’s convenient to enjoy the beach or the resort’s amenities before or after your meal.

Father Rooster is a legendary staple of Playa Ocotal. This beachfront spot has been here almost as long as the town. Fresh sushi, live music, and perfect sunsets make this classic spot a modern favorite.

Things to Do

The tranquil shores of Playa Ocotal still have plenty in the way of activities. Kayaking, boating, swimming, and snorkeling are perennial favorites in the cove. If you go a little farther inland, there is also the fascinating wildlife rescue and sustainable farm, The Monkey Farm. It’s a magical place that has everything from horseback rides to farm tours.

In addition to everything Playa Ocotal offers within its borders, there are also many hiking trails and day trips to be enjoyed in the area, as well as the nightlife in nearby Playas del Coco.

For families, there are several prime schools nestled along the coast to consider. For some towns, they are just moments away. However, even in the more secluded beach towns, a stellar school is no more than half an hour’s drive.
